Caring is one of the most fundamental things that humans do.
This week, we come together to celebrate Direct Support Professionals (aka “DSPs” or “assistants” at L’Arche) — the compassionate, dedicated individuals working to support people with disabilities to live fulfilling lives, ensuring they receive the care, respect, and dignity they deserve.
Whether supporting activities of daily living, providing personal care, or advocating for inclusion, DSPs make a profound impact on the lives of those they support. Their work goes beyond the job description – it’s about building relationships, fostering trust, and developing creative solutions to build environments where everyone can thrive!
In L’Arche around the world, DSPs/assistants take on an even deeper role by helping build intentional communities where people with and without intellectual disabilities live, work, and share life together. L’Arche assistants are not just caregivers that provide high quality care, but friends, advocates, and partners, working alongside community members with intellectual disabilities to create a shared experience of belonging, acceptance, and mutual support.
During DSP Recognition Week, let’s express our gratitude for the dedication and resilience of all DSPs, especially the remarkable assistants at L’Arche. Thank you for the vital role you play making the world a more inclusive place!
