L'Arche
Tahoma Hope began in Tacoma in 1977. “Tahoma” gives reference to the native
people’s name for Mt. Rainier, which dominates our horizon on bright days, and
hope is in recognition of our desire for our life together to be a ‘sign of
hope’ in our world. Our community is comprised of four homes, a day activity
program and a supported employment program. At the heart of our community are
relationships between people with developmental disabilities and those who
share life with them.
Each home
has a personality of its own. Our homes range in size from five to ten people
(assistants and core members). Since the
needs of each house varies, as does the pool of support we may have at any
given time, there is a fluid mix of live-in assistants, respite support and
volunteers in each home.
The mission
of our Farm & Gardens is to create and sell quality products (plants and
crafts), support purposeful work for people with developmental disabilities,
and foster a spirit of caring for land and people. It is an integrated setting
where people of a variety of abilities and gifts, whether core member,
assistant or volunteer is affirmed in his or her dignity, self worth and
connection to all of life. The motto of the Farm is “growing people, growing
plants.”
Noah's
Workshop encompasses a day activity center, Individual Employment and
"Person-to-Person: Pathway to Employment" program. Our day activity
center serves folks with a wide range of disabilities on days when they are not
otherwise engaged in their own Pathway to Employment program.
Our life together
is very much like any other family. Everyone contributes in his or her own way,
working together as a whole. With so many different personalities coming
together from such different backgrounds, this goal of working together
cooperatively takes a lot of work! Yet we know that the work is worth it when
the outcome is a home and work that is based on love and respect for each
individual. We strive to keep the spirit
of the Beatitudes alive. Their simple,
yet challenging message, are a reminder of how we are called to live together
in community.
