Community is not an end in itself; it exists for people.  At L’Arche, we live and work with people who are disabled and entrusted to our care.  This is the essence of our community life and a special aspect of L’Arche.  What we do is not solely a job; it is a way of life.

The first home in L’Arche Syracuse was established in 1974. Today, the community consists of four houses.  While working and living take place in various areas, each person is a member of the whole L’Arche Syracuse community and not solely of his or her own residence or workplace.

Our objectives as a community are: 

• To provide homes where those who need care and those who give it live and work together in a shared life (this shared life will foster community and interdependence);
• To assist persons with developmental disabilities who need assistance in daily living and integration into society;
• To provide direction, assistance and advocacy in the development of personal skills for trades and occupations.
