With a total of seven assistants and eight core members in
our two homes, L’Arche Nehalem is a close-knit community with a deep sense of
family. We are a community of faith composed of people of different faith
traditions, spiritual paths and intellectual abilities. We are committed
to living intentionally out of the deeply spiritual dimension of our life. In
June 2007, L’Arche Nehalem celebrated 20 years as a community. Two of our
present core members have been at the center of our community for each of those
20 years. Our community leader has been a member of L’Arche Nehalem for 18
years, and has announced her covenant commitment in the international family of
L’Arche.
L’Arche Nehalem is located in Portland,
Oregon, a beautiful medium-size city with a
small-town feel in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.
Our core members and assistants can and do enjoy world-class cultural events, a
vibrant music scene, and abundant recreational opportunities, with the
mountains an hour’s drive to the east and the Pacific Ocean 90 miles to the
west.
Our two homes—Nehalem House, a rambling 60s era home, and
Neahkahnie House, a fully accessible home which the community built in
1993—celebrate milestones, transitions, holidays, and regular community nights
as a single family. Celebration is the hallmark of L’Arche community
life, and our core members are at the heart of it.
L’Arche Nehalem enjoys the support of and enriches the lives
of an extended community of more than 150 volunteers and friends who
participate in community life, accompany core members on outings, staff the
annual Christmas Tree Sale fundraiser, provide respite care in the homes, and
help with gardening and cooking. Explore our web site for community photo
albums, our Newsletters and Newspages, volunteer opportunities, contact
information, announcements, and special interactive content, including a Jean
Vanier quote library and a downloadable poster featuring core member artwork.
